The Phone Call

Arriving on Site

Standing on the driveway, the house looked fantastic.

Unfortunately, very little of those original colours could actually be seen.

Years of moss, algae and organic growth had almost completely hidden the character of the roof.

But even before looking at the moss, one thing immediately caught my eye.

There was a tree growing out of the chimney.

In over 2,000 roof restoration projects, we’ve seen plenty of unusual things, but vegetation growing from chimneys is always something we take seriously.

Roots naturally search for moisture and can slowly force apart mortar joints.

Left long enough, that small tree could eventually have caused structural damage to the chimney stack itself.

Thankfully, we’d caught it early.

The Inspection

Before unloading any equipment, we carried out our full roof inspection.

Every project begins this way because appearances can often be misleading.

We carefully checked:

Planning the Day

Telephone cables ran directly across the front of the property.

Positioning a 14-metre cherry picker around overhead wires isn’t something you rush.

Fortunately, Damian has years of experience operating access equipment.

Working slowly and methodically, he carefully manoeuvred the cherry picker into position, allowing us to begin work safely without affecting the overhead cables.

Watching an experienced operator work is impressive.

What might look like a simple lift from the ground actually requires constant awareness of height, reach, balance and surrounding obstacles.

Once Damian had the machine safely positioned, we were ready to begin preparing the property.

Protecting the Customer’s Home

While Damian and I prepared the roof, Cameron concentrated on looking after everything below.

Before a single piece of moss was removed, all of the customer’s garden furniture was carefully moved away from the working area.

Protective sheeting was positioned around the property to catch falling moss and debris.

One of the little things we’ve learnt after restoring more than 2,000 roofs is that customers remember how tidy you leave their home just as much as how clean you leave their roof.

Cameron also carried out another important job that many homeowners never even notice.

He carefully loosened sections of the guttering before the roof clean began.

That might sound unusual, but years of wet moss become surprisingly heavy.

Removing large amounts of compacted moss can place additional strain on older gutter brackets.

Taking a few extra minutes to relieve that pressure helps protect the guttering throughout the cleaning process.

He then completely cleared the existing moss and debris from the gutters and checked every downpipe to make sure water would flow freely once the project was complete.

Applying the Pre-Softwash Treatment

With the property fully prepared and the cherry picker safely positioned, it was finally time to begin work on the roof itself.

Rather than starting with water, we first applied our specialist pre-softwash treatment.

This begins breaking down algae, moss and organic growth before the main cleaning process starts.

By allowing the treatment time to work, the moss becomes easier to remove using our professional low-pressure soft washing system.

The Roof Restoration Begins

By now, the pre-softwash treatment had started to do exactly what it was designed to do.

Years of moss, algae and organic growth were beginning to soften, making them much easier to remove without placing unnecessary stress on the Rosemary clay roof tiles.

This is one of the biggest differences between our roof restoration process and simply turning up with cleaning equipment.

Preparation matters.

After restoring more than 2,000 roofs, we’ve learnt that the better the preparation, the better the final result.

With the treatment doing its job, Damian and I started working methodically across the roof, section by section.

Immediately, the original colours of the brown and red Rosemary clay tiles started to appear again.

It’s always one of the most satisfying moments of any roof restoration project.

Working Safely at Height

People often ask why we use a cherry picker rather than simply walking across every roof.

The answer is simple.

Safety and protecting the customer’s property.

For this project, our 14-metre cherry picker allowed us to safely reach approximately three quarters of the roof from a single position on the driveway.

That meant less movement across the roof, fewer risks and a more efficient way of working.

Because the property was around 20 metres long, there were still approximately six metres of roof beyond the cherry picker’s initial working area.

Rather than trying to overreach or take unnecessary risks, we brought the first section to completion before carefully repositioning the support vehicle.

Damian then reset the cherry picker, allowing us to safely reach the remaining section of roof.

It’s these little decisions that often go unnoticed by customers, but they make a huge difference to both safety and the quality of the finished result.

Restoring the Original Beauty of the Roof

As we progressed across the roof, the transformation became more dramatic with every section we completed.

The thick blanket of moss that had built up over two decades disappeared, revealing the original Rosemary clay tiles underneath.

These tiles are one of the property’s defining features.

Hidden beneath years of moss and staining, their rich brown and red colours had almost been forgotten.

Seeing them reappear was incredibly satisfying—not just for us, but for the homeowner, who came outside several times during the day to see the progress.

Working safely from the cherry picker, Cameron carefully removed the vegetation along with the root system.

Once removed, we carried out another close inspection of the chimney.

Fortunately, because the issue had been caught early, only some minor repointing work was required.

Had the tree been left to continue growing for another few years, the outcome could have been very different.

It’s another great example of why regular roof inspections are so important.

Small problems rarely stay small forever.

Looking After More Than Just the Roof

Throughout the day Cameron continued checking the gutters, clearing away debris and making sure no moss was left sitting in downpipes or drainage channels.
