Roof Cleaning in Appleton, Warrington – Restoring a Large 15+ Year-Old Roof
Roof cleaning Appleton, Warrington – this was one of those projects where the difference between the roof we arrived to and the roof we left behind was immediately noticeable.
The property is a substantial family home in Appleton, Warrington (WA4) with a large, multi-section tiled roof that had accumulated significant organic growth over the years.
The roof was more than 15 years old, and across large areas the original appearance of the tiles had become hidden beneath years of weathering and organic contamination.
The customer came to us through word of mouth, which is always something I appreciate.
When somebody contacts Just Clean because someone else has recommended us, there’s already a level of trust there. Our job is to make sure the work lives up to that recommendation.
This was also a sizeable property, so before the team arrived, I spent time planning how we were going to tackle it, where we’d need to position our access equipment and how we’d work systematically around the different roof sections.
It turned into a full day’s work – on one of the hottest days we’d had for a while.
And by the end of it, the owners told us they thought their roof looked brand new.
A Large Roof With Years of Organic Growth
Looking at the aerial images before we started really shows the scale of the job.
There were extensive areas of dark organic growth and weathering across the older sections of the roof.
From ground level you could see the roof needed attention, but getting above it gives you a completely different perspective.
The drone imagery showed just how widespread the contamination was.
Some areas were substantially darker than others, particularly across the larger main roof sections and around the ridge areas.
That’s one of the reasons we like documenting these jobs properly. It allows both us and the customer to see the true condition of the roof rather than relying solely on what can be seen from the garden or driveway.

Why Part of This Roof Is a Different Colour
There’s an interesting feature on this property which is very obvious in the photographs.
Part of the roof is a much stronger red colour.
That isn’t because we’ve cleaned one section and left another section untouched.
The property has previously had a side extension built, and the extension has newer red roof tiles. That’s why the finished property has a naturally two-tone appearance.
It’s an important detail because once the older roof was cleaned, the distinction between the original roof and the later extension became much clearer.
You can actually read some of the history of the property from the roof.
Planning the Appleton Roof Clean
Because of the size of the property, this wasn’t a job where I wanted the lads simply turning up in the morning and deciding how to approach it as they went along.
I planned the job beforehand.
We had all three of us working on this project, and the access equipment formed an important part of the plan.
The video from the day gives a good indication of the scale involved.
You can see the boom extending from the front/street side of the property and taking the technician in the basket up to roof level. From there we could work methodically across sections of the roof without relying on unsafe or unsuitable access methods.
With a property this size, good access doesn’t just make the work easier.
It allows us to control how we tackle the roof.
The Side Extension Was the Biggest Access Challenge
Most of the project went according to plan, but the side extension was the trickiest part of the property.
The extension changes the footprint of the building and meant that one cherry-picker position wasn’t enough to safely and effectively reach everything we needed to.
We therefore had to move and reposition the cherry picker during the job.
That’s something customers don’t necessarily think about when looking at a roof-cleaning quote.
Two properties can have a similar amount of roof surface, but the access requirements can make them completely different jobs.
Here, it wasn’t simply the size of the roof. It was the combination of the main house, extension, different roof elevations and the distance we needed to reach.
Seeing the Transformation While We Worked
One of my favourite images from this project is actually one taken during the clean.
You can see an extremely clear boundary between an area that’s been worked on and the older weathered section beside it.
That’s when you realise how much the appearance of a roof can gradually change without the homeowner necessarily noticing.
It doesn’t happen overnight.
Year after year, the colour becomes duller and biological growth becomes more established. Because you see your own house every day, the change can almost go unnoticed.
Then we start cleaning it and suddenly the original appearance begins coming back.
On this roof, the difference was substantial.

A Full Day Working in the Summer Heat
There was another challenge on this particular job that had nothing to do with the roof itself.
The heat.
It was a lovely sunny day – perfect for the photographs – but it made the physical side of the job tough.
We were on the property for the full day, and all three of us were working in the heat.
There was a bit of banter between the lads about the weather we’d been having in the UK.
At one point we were joking that we might as well be working in Spain or Dubai with temperatures like this.
Damo’s response was that at least he was getting a great tan out of it.
That’s the reality behind some of these finished photographs. You see a beautifully restored roof at the end, but there’s a team that’s spent an entire day working above a property, moving equipment and methodically working around a large roof in very warm conditions.
Regardless of the temperature, though, the standard doesn’t change.
If anything, conditions like that mean we have to manage the day properly, keep working methodically and not start rushing because everybody wants to finish.
Working Around the Property
Another thing that’s apparent from the aerial imagery is how much there is around this house.
There’s a conservatory, patio areas, established planting and gardens immediately below different sections of the roof.
That means the job isn’t simply about what’s happening above our heads.
We’re always conscious that we’re working at somebody’s home.
Access, equipment positioning and how we move around the property all need to be considered alongside the roof-cleaning work itself.
For me, leaving the surrounding property properly looked after is part of the job – not an optional extra.
The Difference From Above Was Huge
Once we’d completed the main cleaning work, the drone gave us the view we really wanted.
Comparing the aerial images before and after tells the story better than almost anything I could write.
Beforehand, large sections of the older roof had a dark, weathered appearance with visible organic contamination across the tiles.
Afterwards, those same roof elevations were considerably cleaner and lighter, with the individual tile pattern clearly visible again.
You can also see the roof’s shape much more clearly.
The hips, ridge, different elevations and the relationship between the original property and the extension all stand out once the years of surface contamination have been removed.
It looked like a different roof.
Why We Document Our Roof Cleaning Projects
We increasingly use photographs, video and aerial imagery to document the work we carry out.
There’s a practical reason for that.
A homeowner can’t safely stand above their own house and inspect the work we’ve completed.
Drone imagery gives them a perspective they would otherwise never have.
On this project, it also allowed us to capture the condition beforehand, the cleaning taking place and the finished result.
For future customers, it means they don’t just have to take our word for what we can achieve.
They can see actual properties we’ve worked on around Warrington.
The Owners Thought They Had a Brand-New Roof
The reaction from the owners was exactly what we’d hoped for.
They were really happy with the finished result and said they thought the roof looked brand new.
They also told us they would recommend Just Clean to other people.
For a customer who originally found us through word of mouth, that’s probably the best way for this particular job to end.
They came to us because somebody had recommended our work.
We completed their roof.
They were delighted with it.
And now they’re prepared to recommend us to somebody else.
That’s how we’ve built a lot of the business over the years.
The Neighbours Noticed Too
It wasn’t only the homeowners who noticed what was happening.
While we were working, several people living nearby asked for our number because they were impressed by what they were seeing.
I always think that’s a strong sign on a roof-cleaning project.
Neighbours see more than the finished photograph.
They see us arrive.
They see the equipment.
They see how the lads work during the day.
And then they see the difference in the roof as the job progresses.
When that results in people coming over and asking how they can contact us, we know the work is speaking for itself.
Professional Roof Cleaning for Under £2,500
The total cost of this project came in at under £2,500, including the materials required to complete the work.
For that investment, the owners had a large 15+ year-old roof professionally cleaned across the property, including the more challenging areas around the extension.
The visual difference is significant.
And importantly, the customer wasn’t replacing a roof.
They already had a roof that needed its appearance restoring.
That’s an important distinction.
Professional roof cleaning isn’t about making an old or defective roof magically new. It’s about assessing what’s there and, where appropriate, professionally removing the years of contamination that can completely change how a perfectly serviceable roof looks.
In this case, the owners’ reaction said it all:
They thought it looked like a brand-new roof.
Another Appleton Roof Cleaning Project Completed
This was a big day’s work.
A large property.
A roof over 15 years old.
Multiple elevations.
A side extension that required us to reposition our access equipment.
Three members of the team.
And some serious summer heat thrown in for good measure.
But it was also one of those jobs where the finished result makes the effort worthwhile.
The owners were delighted, neighbours were asking for our number and the aerial photographs show just how dramatically the appearance of the property changed.
For me, that’s another successful Just Clean project completed in Appleton, Warrington.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much does roof cleaning cost in Appleton, Warrington?
The cost of professional roof cleaning depends on the size and condition of the roof, its design and how easy it is to access. This large roof cleaning project in Appleton cost under £2,500 including the materials required for the work. Because every property is different, we assess each roof individually before providing a quotation.
2. Can professional roof cleaning make an older roof look new again?
Professional cleaning can dramatically improve the appearance of a roof when much of the discolouration is caused by moss, algae and other organic growth. The roof on this Appleton property was over 15 years old, and after cleaning the owners told us they thought it looked brand new.
3. How do you clean a large roof with difficult-to-reach areas?
We plan the access requirements around the individual property. This Appleton house had a large roof and a side extension that made certain areas more difficult to reach. We used our cherry picker and repositioned it during the project so our team could safely access the different sections and complete the roof to our usual high standard.
4. How long does professional roof cleaning take?
The time required depends on the size, condition and complexity of the roof. This particular Appleton roof cleaning project required all three members of our team and took a full day to complete. Despite working through very hot summer conditions, we didn’t rush the job and completed the roof to the same standard we expect on every Just Clean project.
